Chief Atlacatl Statue at Antigua Cuscatlán - La Libertad, El Salvador
The first attempts at conquest of the Pipil people of El Salvador began in the early 1520’s and were defeated by the army lead by Chief Atlacatl. Eventually, the Spanish forces did defeat the army and had the Pipil people under their rule but it took 3 tries (leaving and coming back).
He is considered a hero by most Salvadorans for successfully defeating the Spaniards several times and relentlessly leading a strong battalion though he was outnumbered by people with more developed weaponry.
